Thanks for a great summer!

Thanks to all our library patrons who participated in the Summer Reading Club this year!  We had a great summer filled with fun events and, of course, lots and lots of reading. This year we had the highest number of readers we’ve ever had registered in our Summer Reading Club.

Thanks also to the following businesses and organizations for their generous contributions:

  • Allegany Arts Council
  • Anchor Homes
  • Baltimore Orioles
  • College Savings Plan of Maryland
  • Kohls
  • Maryland Science Center
  • Queen City Creamery
  • Taco Bell
  • Western Maryland Regional Library

Summer Reading Club may be over, but you can still have a blast and read every day!  Thanks for a great summer!  We look forward to doing it all again next year and keep reading!

Picture of the Week: Take me out to the ballgame!

Lily Cessna (fifth from the left) was the Summer Reading Club participant who went down on the Orioles field and represented Allegany County Library System at the August 6th Orioles game.   Lily and her family had a wonderful time and that it was an experience they will never forget.  Her Dad even caught a foul ball!  Congratulations to all our Summer Readers!

Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian

Seemingly nothing in this world daunts the young criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl.

In the fairy world, however, there is a small thing that has gotten under his skin on more than one occasion: Opal Koboi. In The Last Guardians, the evil pixie is wreaking havoc yet again. This time his arch rival has somehow reanimated dead fairy warriors who were buried in the grounds of Fowl Manor. Their spirits have possessed Artemis’s little brothers, making his siblings even more annoying than usual. The warriors don’t seem to realize that the battle they were fighting when they died-a battle against Artemis–is long over. Artemis has until sunrise to get the spirits to vacate his brothers and go back into the earth where they belong. Can he count on a certain LEPrecon fairy to join him in what could well be his last stand?

New York Times best-selling author and comic genius Eoin Colfer will leave Artemis Fowl fans gasping up to the very end of this thrilling finale to the blockbuster series.

Crafty Saturday: Sea Shell Koalas

For this week’s edition of Crafty Saturdays, learn how to turn the seashells you collected at the beach this summer into a charming koala bear!  From Martha Stewart Living:

Sea creatures are notoriously shy, but the ones you see here managed to come out of their shells to greet passersby. You can find seashells year-round in craft stores and some gift shops.

Koala How-To
1. Experiment with different combinations to come up with animal shapes before gluing everything into place. We chose small scallop and clam shells for the koalas, and long razor clams decorated with ring-top cowries for the tree.

2. Use small cushions of polymer clay, which is pliable and slightly sticky, to test out various arrangements. For assembly, a tacky, quick-drying glue works best. Build heads and bodies separately. Before joining larger parts, use a brush to glue on small parts (such as beads for eyes) and clay to support creatures while glue dries.
